Interpreting

Skopos24 provides face to face, consecutive and simultaneous interpreting services (for meetings with a large number of participants, e.g. at court or during study visits, seminars and business negotiations).

There are different forms of interpreting:

  • Face to face interpreting – used during less formal consultations (e.g. appointments with the doctor or the solicitor). The interpreter’s role here is to convey concisely and accurately what is being said, preferably during natural breaks in conversation.
  • Consecutive interpreting – used during formal business meetings, negotiations, training or presentations. The speaker pauses after every few sentences, so that the interpreter can translate precisely what has been said.
  • Simultaneous interpreting – technique which requires the interpreter to speak along with the speaker. There are two kinds of simultaneous interpreting: a) whispered interpreting; b) conference interpreting. Whispered interpreting is used in situations such as during court proceedings, when the interpreter concurrently translates what is being said. On the other hand, conference interpreting requires special audio equipment (such as: soundproof booth, microphone and headphones for the audience). It is the most difficult form of interpreting, which requires the highest level of linguistic ability, perfect concentration skills and high resilience to stress. Conference interpreters are employed mainly by organisations such as the European Commission or the United Nations, but their assistance is also needed during many other meetings with a large number of participants.
  • Telephone interpreting – method used during emergencies, for instance when the interpreter cannot attend a given meeting due to time constraints or long distances. Telephone interpreting can be very useful when you need assistance with a quick, short notice appointment. Please contact us directly by phone or email if you would like to request this service.

Our interpreters regularly work at institutions such as:

HM Courts and Tribunal Service / Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service / Immigration Appellate Authority / Home Office / UK Visas and Immigration / National Probation Service / Prison Service / Social Work / National Health Service / Health and Safety Executive / Police / BBC / Housing Associations / City and county councils / Schools / Law firms
